If you would like to learn about avalanche safety and safe backcountry travel techniques, taking a recreational avalanche course from experienced avalanche professionals is the best way to do so. Tuition is FREE if you bring along at least 5 paying friends!
Here at Avalanche Safety our instructors have a minimum of five years teaching recreational avalanche courses and have worked professionally in the avalanche industry. The courses take place in our classroom in Golden, BC and in the intermediate/advanced backcountry terrain of the Purcell Mountain Range.
Our AST courses run for two days and the course curriculum has been developed by the Canadian Avalanche Association (CAA). The morning of the first day is spent in the classroom, while the rest of the course is spent in the field. We explore the terrain inside and outside the boundaries to further our understanding of avalanches and safe travel in avalanche terrain. AST 1-Ski focuses on avalanche self rescue, recognizing avalanche terrain, safe backcountry travel techniques, interpreting the avalanche bulletin, and trip planning. Course costs include a course manual and certificate. This course is a prerequisite for all those wishing to gain further training in the avalanche industry. The maximum instructor to student ratio is 1 to 8.
These courses are not suitable for a beginner skill level. Skiers/Snowboarders must be comfortable on intermediate to advanced terrain.
All participants are required to have for BOTH days:
Custom courses are available anytime with a minimum of 4 participants (or join one of our scheduled courses).
