Big Iron Shootout - Revelstoke Avalanche - March 14, 2010

Submitted by administrator on Mon, 03/15/2010 - 13:32

An extremely sad day for the snowmobiling community this past Saturday. Two sledders were killed at the Big Iron shootout in Revelstoke at Turbo.  A class 3 avalanche  came down and hit a large group of spectators (30-50 people). Find more details here bc.rcmp.ca/ViewPage.action

Our thoughts and condolensces go out to those families who have lost loved ones in this tragic event. To the large number of injured, some who are our neighbours, Avalanche Safety Solutions wishes you a speedy recovery. Thanks to all of the search and rescue members who helped out. We know many members who attended and put their own lives on hold.

Under the circumstances it is amazing that there were not more fatalities. Avalanche conditions remain extremely touchy around here (the South Columbias) with 50-80cm of new snow on top of a mix of suncrust and surface hoar.

Play safe; hit the trees and bowls and hang out in safe areas well away from avalanche runouts.
