BUYERS' GUIDE
The numbers on the box are best case. The 51 km line of sight range is for open air, and in real mountain terrain, with trees, ridges, and valleys in the way, expect closer to 1 to 10 km.
The practical secret is to set up your group before you leave the parking lot. Everyone picks the same channel and privacy code, and the dual channel scanning is handy for monitoring a second channel. Because it uses standard FRS channels, it will also talk to most FRS radios from other brands.
The battery is built in, so charge it the night before, and carry a small power bank if you're out for more than a day. If you want a more rugged unit, take a look at the BC Link Radio 2.0, which is rated IP56 instead of IP55. A radio is a great way to stay connected, but it's not a replacement for a beacon, probe, and shovel and the training to use them.
