The Focus Pro is Ortovox’s transceiver for professional rescuers, guides, and serious backcountry riders. It has an 80 m search strip width, a permanent overview of the four nearest transmitters, and tools you won’t find on a basic beacon, like analog audio output and manual reach reduction. Smart Antenna Technology switches to the best transmitting antenna automatically, so you can be found faster if you’re buried. The 2.7 inch display is the largest of its type on the market, and the large buttons work with gloves on.

BUYERS’ GUIDE
This is a serious beacon, so be honest with yourself about what you’ll use. The analog audio mode, manual reach reduction, and scrolling are tools for complex multiple-burial searches. If you’re a recreational rider who doesn’t practise those, you may be paying for features you won’t touch. In that case, ask us about the Ortovox Focus Voice or Diract Voice. If you do train for complicated searches, or you work in the mountains, this is the one. Download the Ortovox app right away. It handles software updates, registration, and the training mode, and registering extends the warranty to five years. Because it’s rechargeable, charge it before the season and check the level before every trip. One behaviour to know: if it senses no movement for two minutes in search mode, it switches back to transmit so you can be found in a second slide. That’s a safety feature, but it means you should keep moving during a search. However good the beacon is, it only works if you practise with it, so take a course and drill with your group.
